Interview with Bert, Creator of Ed’N’Em

“Proto-Emily gives a tiny a tongue bath,” Bert’s first public drawing

Bert is the traditional artist behind the popular Ed’N’Em monochrome comic. That series features the adventures of Edward “Ed,” Emily “Em,” Juliette, Sam, and Sarah. Those characters engage in various size scenarios most often involving tiny men with normal-sized women and frequently partaking in vore. One of my personal favorites was Macro March Growth Drive from last year in which Sam grew far above skyscraper height! Fans can find Bert’s drawings at Cara, DeviantArt, NewGrounds, and Picarto as well as via social media platforms Bluesky, Tellonym, and X/Twitter. Furthermore, people can support Bert via Ko-fi and Patreon.

#1) Can you tell the readers a little about yourself?

Hello ! I’m Bert’ and I draw the Ed’N’Em size stories ! I was born in the region of Alsace in France back on the 25th of November 1990! I left my hometown almost 15 years ago to study in art school far away and have stayed here ever since. I used to work as a receptionist in a museum, but I’ve been unemployed since the COVID crisis. I’ve been wanting to do art and comics for a while but only got the courage to be active in the size community since early 2018, where a friend convinced me to post a kinky drawing of what would then become my titular characters Ed’ and Em’ … and now here I am!

Bert drew Vocaloid mascot Hatsune Miku in Alsatian attire. This was part of a recent trend which began in late June 2024 when ErinArtista created Brazilian Miku.

#2) How did you first become interested in giants and tiny people?

I feel like I’ve always been into it … like, there’s so many stories, movies and cartoons that include size elements, be it someone shrinking/growing or naturally being huge/small … and I recall gravitating and feeling weird (in a good way) about these ever since I was a young child.

When I reached teenage years I started awakening to my sexuality and actively look for such stories (including erotica) and would eventually begin writing a story that’ll occupy my brain for the next ten years or so which starred a civilization of tiny men and giant women, but ultimately went nowhere and is currently shelved, maybe I’ll go back to it some day.

#3) What are a few of your favorite works from other artists and writers?

I started reading comics really young with the Smurfs and Dragon Ball, the classic Franco-Belgian (Franquin, Peyo, Goscinni, Morris, etc.) comics collection of my parents and whatever Japanese (Akira Toriyama, Kazuki Takahashi, etc.) comics I could get my hands on at the time are my bedrock. Some of the artists that were huge influence for me later would include the likes of Kentaro Miura, Naoki Urasawa, Eiichiro Oda, Tsukasa Hojo, Masashi Kishimoto, Yusuke Murata & Riichiro Inagaki, Komi Naoshi to name a few … regarding size stuff I recall Karbo being the first artist to catch my eye.

#4) How would you describe your art style?

Mmh~ … back when I was in art school I did some art for a team that translated manga scans, and they thought my art style was very much like European comics … while my comic book teachers thought it was too much like Japanese ones … so for years I’ve described my style as “too European for manga fans and too influenced by manga for comic fans.”

#5) Can you provide a little background for folks new to Ed’N’Em. Who are these characters?

They pretty much all started as very self indulgent characters I’d use to draw kinky size content, but they quickly took a life of their own. Initially I came up with Emily which is pretty much what I’d draw if you asked me to draw my type of girl, initially the tiny she was toying with was featureless but I eventually gave him a name and a face, so Edward was born. Soon enough the more I drew them the more I got to know them and they developed various traits and personalities. At which point I became a bit more daring and drew a small comic about Emily concealing Ed’ while going to her job, and that introduced the heartfelt tone and relationship themes I still explore today, including the character of Sarah who’s now in a relationship with Emily while they all try to figure out how polyamory works for them.

Later I felt like drawing some more cruel stuff on the side, but since I was aiming for wholesome with my existing character I had to introduce new one, Sam’, who’s been the protagonist of everything I’d do including vore and the likes and brings an aura of mystery to the whole thing … lastly came her roommate Juliette and the matriochkas (her collection of various sized tinies) who’s a bit of an airhead but means well, despite her insecurities spelling trouble to all shrunken individuals in her care.

#6) Can you discuss the rewards for supporting your Patreon page?

Currently the main reward is access to my private discord were I post most of my drawings early, sometimes post other drawings I don’t share anywhere else.

A spring cleaning of my Patreon is long overdue because I used to do more but I ended up hitting a pretty bad burnout and paused my Patreon until a lot of my patrons at the time shared with me that they still wanted to support me … so I opened it again without the pressure of said rewards … but I’m pretty sure I haven’t correctly updated it since …

#7) Are there any upcoming projects you would like to mention? Can fans meet you at the upcoming SizeCon scheduled for Spring 2025 in Portland, Oregon?

I got a few ideas brewing … notably some characters who haven’t interacted yet crossing paths, backstories being revealed … but I need to find the energy to draw all that! As I am answering this question I am five days away from an appointment to get myself a passport, and I very much hope I can make it to SizeCon!

Thank you for doing this interview!

Bert posted this drawing, and two others, on July 20, 2024 via X/Twitter with the caption “That’s all I want in life, is it so much to ask for?”
