Mitogawa Wataru’s Manga “Chieri’s Love is 8 Meters” Volume 1

Good morning GTS manga fans,

Today’s review will cover the first volume, consisting of 10 chapters, of Mitogawa Wataru’s manga “Chieri’s Love is 8 Meters,” ちえりの恋は8メートル in Japanese. No other collected volumes are available, but the series is on its 20th chapter as of mid-March 2023 and thus another tankobon should be released soon.

In addition to this series, the creator served as the artist and writer for “Gunbured x Sisters.” They also drew the manga adaptations of “Saredo Tsumibito wa Ryuu to Odoru: Rinbu” and “Suisei no Gargantia,” a.k.a. Chieri’s Love is 8 Meters was first released in early October 2022 at the online magazine Shonen Jump+ (By the way, the first chapter can be read for free here.) It is a romantic comedy focused on the budding romantic relationship between two young friends, a boy named Kotaki Yumeji 小滝夢路 and a girl named Oomine Chieri 大嶺ちえり. They have known each other for a long time, but Chieri moved away during grade school.

Chieri had changed dramatically when she returned in the 11th grade. Chieri had become 8 meters tall for unknown reasons and so far the creator is not interested in exploring how or why she became so huge. Instead, the focus is squarely on the humorous situations which arise when a supernaturally tall girl interacts with a normal-sized world, including doing things with her special friend Yumeji.

The interactions typically fall into the category of suggestive, but non-explicit action. That includes panty shots, partly exposed cleavage, and mildly transgressive intrusions such as Chieri peeking into the men’s restroom while trying to find Yumeji or leaning into his bedroom to wake him up first thing in the morning.

Chieri steals his towel in gym class and challenges him to climb her to get it back! She squeezes her rain-soaked skirt and soaks Yume with the water. There was even a brief sequence implying the threat of vore! She pretended that she was going to eat him 😉 Albeit, the sense of actual danger was minimum, if it even existed at all. There’s a fun, light-hearted tone to the entire series.

The narrative makes it clear that they share a strong bond. For example, Chieri worked very hard to make a normal-sized Bento for her friend. For his part, Yumeji dries her hair after the rainstorm to prevent her from catching a cold. They share meaningful glances and other well-worn tropes associated with young love. There were callbacks to their early childhood such as the time when Yumeji told Chieri that he would protect her and that he was her prince. Plus the time they used discarded cardboard as an umbrella during heavy rains.

Chieri occasionally uses her size to do good deeds such as lifting up a car to allow an old lady to cross a street, or jumping over a pedestrian bridge to chase down a purse thief! Those are fun, little bits. However, for the most part the duo do routine activities such as frequenting a crepe shop in a shopping center by a train station, buying melon bread, etc. that will feel familiar to the Japanese audience.

On the negative side, there’s not a lot of excitement. There are no competing love interests, nor any signs that difficulties might arise. A government department provides for Yumeji’s oversized needs to include constructing an appropriately-sized dwelling:

The two are destined to eventually become a couple without the slightest speed bump to derail their inevitable progress. That makes for a comforting, easy read, but does run the risk of being boring. Chieri does not have to worry that a normal-sized girl might steal Yumeji’s affection, because no potential rivals exist. At least, there were no hints of a romantic triangle within the first ten chapters.
